The objective of this project is to improve the value of canola meal. Research for the DOTM project is divided into three major themes: 1) developing a strategy for lowering the fibre content of the seed coat of Brassica napus and the resulting canola meal, 2) understanding the genetics behind the yellow seed colour in an elite canola line that possesses good yield potential, high oil content and less fibre than traditional (black seeded) lines, and 3) reducing anti-nutritional components and enhancing carotenoid content as it is health promoting. Germplasm derived from this collaborative endeavour could become a new industry standard for canola, facilitating new food and feed applications.
