For most startups, securing enough capital to move from research to commercialization is one of the greatest challenges they will face. For Alberta-based Rapid Infection Diagnostics Inc. (RID), that journey has taken more than a decade, required nearly $20 million in investment, and reinforced a lesson that many innovators learn the hard way, that breakthrough science alone is not enough.

Today, RID is emerging as one of Alberta’s most promising life sciences companies, advancing toward regulatory approvals, preparing for a Series A financing round, and positioning itself to enter a global diagnostics market worth billions. Along the way, the company has generated skilled jobs, supported the development of Alberta’s innovation ecosystem, and demonstrated how strategic public investment can help transform research into commercial opportunity.

The company’s story is also a powerful example of how Genome Alberta’s early and sustained support can help bridge the transition from academic discovery to a market-ready business, one of the most difficult gaps in innovation.

“Without the follow-on funding from Genome Alberta and Genome Canada, we may not have been able to do this at all,” says Troy Feener, Chief Operating Officer of Rapid Infection Diagnostics. “The costs are simply too high, the timeline too long, and the commercial pathway too uncertain for private capital to step in with sufficient investments at the earliest stages.”

From Research Program to Venture-Backed Growth Story

RID was incorporated in 2019, but it began in 2016  through Genome Alberta and Genome Canada-supported research led by Dr. Ian Lewis (Founder and CEO of RID) at the University of Calgary. What began as a research project has steadily evolved into a company preparing to compete in international markets.

That evolution has required patience, persistence, and significant investment. To date, approximately $18 million USD has been invested in the development of RID’s technology through non-dilutive funding sources, including Genome Alberta, Genome Canada, Alberta Innovates, PrairiesCAN, and other partners. Notably, the company has reached this stage without raising venture capital or giving up equity.

The result is a company that has effectively bypassed the traditional pre-seed and seed stages and is now preparing for a $25 million USD Series A financing round.

Building a Business Around a Global Market Opportunity

RID’s technology addresses one of healthcare’s most persistent challenges, which is identifying bacterial infections quickly enough to support timely treatment decisions. Current laboratory methods can take several days to provide definitive results, and RID’s platform reduces that timeline dramatically, delivering results 30-40 hours faster. “In the case of serious infections, where the risk of dying increases 7% per hour before the correct antimicrobial is prescribed, this technology can be the difference between life and death” explains Lewis.

While the science is significant, the commercial implications may be even more compelling. Healthcare systems around the world face growing pressure to reduce costs, improve patient outcomes, and combat antimicrobial resistance. Faster, more cost-effective diagnostic information can help reduce unnecessary treatments, shorten delays in care, and improve resource utilization across hospitals and laboratories.

The opportunity is particularly significant in urinary tract infection testing, one of the highest-volume microbiology testing categories in Alberta and in many healthcare systems globally.

RID is currently completing validation studies with Alberta Precision Labs in Edmonton while preparing for a second study at Vancouver General Hospital. Together, those two sites represent an estimated 10 to 15 percent of the Canadian market by test volume and provide an important pathway toward Health Canada approval and broader nationwide commercialization.

At the same time, the company is advancing its regulatory strategy in the United States. An FDA pre-submission has already been accepted, positioning RID for accessing one of the world’s largest healthcare markets.

The Long Road from Discovery to Commercialization

“We originally thought a two-year project would generate enough data that someone like Thermo Fisher would potentially acquire the technology,” says Feener. “What every major company told us was, ‘This is amazing. Come back when you have a business.”

That realization fundamentally changed the company’s trajectory.

Rather than focusing solely on scientific validation, RID began building the commercial foundation required to bring a healthcare innovation to market. The company expanded its intellectual property portfolio, developed industry partnerships, pursued regulatory pathways, and built the operational framework necessary to scale. Today, RID has submitted 18 patents across multiple jurisdictions, with 11 already granted globally.

For Feener, the experience revealed a reality often overlooked in discussions about innovation.

“What we learned is that the gap between discovery and commercialization is enormous, poorly understood by academic innovators, and incredibly expensive to bridge.”

Creating Economic Value in Alberta

The economic impact extends beyond the company itself. Over the past decade, RID and its associated research programs under Dr. Lewis have supported more than 160 highly qualified personnel in Alberta. Many of those individuals have developed expertise at the intersection of biotechnology, diagnostics, and commercialization, helping strengthen the province’s growing life sciences workforce.

The company estimates that follow-on economic returns generated from Genome Alberta and Genome Canada investments are approximately $60 million.

As RID prepares for its next phase of growth, additional employees currently working within the university environment are expected to transition into the company, expanding Alberta’s life sciences talent base even further.

Strengthening Alberta’s Innovation Ecosystem

RID’s influence has also helped shape Alberta’s broader innovation ecosystem. Recognizing the challenges faced by emerging diagnostics companies, RID helped co-develop the Alberta Centre for Advanced Diagnostics. Supported through funding from Genome Alberta, PrairiesCan, and Alberta Innovates, the centre has provided support to more than 100 medtech ventures over the past several years.

The company’s work has also led to the creation of an additional spinout venture focused on rapid point-of-care urinary tract infection detection, further extending the commercialization potential of the original research platform.

These ripple effects demonstrate how successful commercialization can create value well beyond a single company, helping build the infrastructure, expertise, and networks needed for future innovators to succeed.

Why Early Investment Matters

RID’s journey underscores an important reality for Canada’s life sciences sector. World-class discoveries alone do not create companies, jobs, or economic growth. Translating research into products requires sustained investment, patient capital, and organizations willing to support innovators through years of development and uncertainty.

Genome Alberta played a critical role throughout RID’s journey by providing not only funding, but also the confidence that comes with long-term commitment.

Feener describes Genome Alberta’s support as some of the most important assistance the company received, citing its willingness to continue investing as the technology matured and the commercialization pathway became clearer.

That commitment is now reflected in a meaningful milestone. Funding that once flowed through academic research programs is now being directed to RID as a company, signaling its transition from university-based innovation to a commercial enterprise with global ambitions.

As Alberta continues to build its life sciences sector, stories like RID’s demonstrate that successful commercialization is rarely the result of a single breakthrough. It is the product of sustained investment, strong partnerships, and organizations willing to support innovators through the long journey from discovery to market.

For Rapid Infection Diagnostics Inc., that journey is still unfolding. Yet the company has already become a compelling example of how Alberta-grown innovation can create economic value, attract investment, build talent, and position the province as a leader in the next generation of health technologies.
