Edmonton, Alberta – September 24, 2026 – Today, the Government of Alberta announced an additional $1 million investment from 2026-2029 for Genome Alberta’s work placement programs.
This investment will create new roles for skilled talent at 18-20 Alberta small and medium-sized businesses to develop and scale new genomics technologies. Alberta has a rapidly expanding life sciences sector, and skilled talent is in demand from the companies who are creating a globally competitive sector in our province.
Genome Alberta is proud to play a leadership role in the delivery of these programs and in:
- Connecting employers with skilled talent in areas including big data analysis, AI and machine learning, bioinformatics, computational biology, marketing, partnership and business development.
- Connecting recent graduates with fast-growing, innovative companies with meaningful opportunities to gain experience, and contribute to the growth of biotech companies across the province.
- Enabling the talent attraction, retention and development needed to sustain growth of our homegrown biotech companies and vibrant life science sector.

About the Work Placement Programs
- Eligible companies are part of precision health, agriculture and agri-food, environment and natural resources sectors and have a genomics/omics component to their business.
- There are two program streams, one for Business Development Work Placements which is open to Alberta post-secondary graduates from a business or related program, and one for Big Data Science & AI Work Placements which is open to Alberta post-secondary graduates from bioinformatics, computational biology or data science & AI programs.
- Applications are now being accepted for host companies and recent graduates.
- Placements are for a term of 1 year.
