Healthy Outcomes through Genomic Innovations

Overview

Precision health refers to a comprehensive approach to healthcare delivery, which tailors care to a patient’s unique circumstances. Precision health uses an individual’s multiple omics profiles (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.) and linked phenotypic data (clinical, lifestyle, environmental) to provide tailored healthcare, optimizing diagnostic and therapeutic strategies while mitigating adverse reactions. While evidence supports the improvements in patient care and savings to healthcare systems with an increased access to genetic testing, in the western Canadian provinces the broad adoption and implementation is currently limited.

The Healthy Outcomes through Genomic Innovations Initiative (Healthy Outcomes Initiative), a joint initiative between Genome Alberta and Genome British Columbia with support from industry partners, is supporting implementation research designed to accelerate the development and adoption of genomics infrastructure and genomics-enabled technologies to improve healthcare within our jurisdiction’s unique health system.

Funding Highlights

Full Application deadline: CLOSED
Project Envelope Range:
$300,000-$750,000

Key Objectives

  • Focus on near-term solutions (duration of 6 – 18 months from project launch to outcomes) to accelerate the adoption of broader genomic testing into routine clinical care.
  • Expand genomics-based testing and technologies into routine care by addressing system barriers and de-risking adoption.
  • Find solutions that address equitable delivery of healthcare and access to genomics-based testing across rural and urban settings.
  • Enable improved integration of genomics data into digital health infrastructure that enhances health outcomes for patients.

Project Eligibility

Funding was granted to eligible researchers based in Alberta or British Columbia who demonstrated the capacity to deliver genomics-based or genomics-enabled health innovations aligned with provincial health priorities. Eligible applicants included those affiliated with academic institutions, government organizations, and not-for-profit research entities, provided they were in good standing and demonstrated engagement with health authorities.
