Blending Indigenous knowledge and the more traditional approach to science "is hard" said one of the participants in the
Summer
internship for
INdigenous peoples in Genomics training program held recently at the University of Alberta. It made for a busy and intense week but the program sets out to do exactly that - incorporate 2 knowledge systems under the same umbrella.
With the study of Chronic Wasting Disease running throughout the week, that blending of hard science with the close relationship between Indigenous peoples and the land, meant participants had a stake in the research. It also brought a different 'way of knowing' to the study of CWD.
As you'll hear in this podcast from freelance broadcaster Don Hill, it was not an either/or exercise. Rather it was a personal effort by students and faculty to understand the science of CWD while incorporating an Indigenous approach, critique, and concern to research.
