178th Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

The 2012 AAAS Meeting will be held in Vancouver. This is the first AAAS meeting in Vancouver and the first one outside the U.S. since it was in Toronto in 1981.

"Flattening the World: Building the Global Knowledge Society" will focus on the complex, interconnected challenges of the 21st century and on pathways to global solutions through international, multidisciplinary efforts.
The event runs from February 16th to the 20th, 2012.

Application of Genomics to Hydrocarbon Resource Development: Status, Opportunities and Reality Check

This one day workshop will bring together members of industry, government and academia to:

  • Discuss the role genomics can play in developing a more productive and responsible hydrocarbon energy sector.
  • Explore funding models to advance this area of research.
  • Assess the Albertan, Canadian and international research and infrastructure capacity in environmental and energy genomics.

The contributions to the discussions by participants and panellists will be used by Genome Alberta and the Public Policy Forum to generate a Position Paper which will be shared with governments, industry and other relevant stakeholders.

The workshop will begin with a session in the morning addressing the current state of hydrocarbon metagenomic science as it relates to energy production, bioremediation and innovation policy. This will be followed by a discussion around three central questions.

  1. Will genomics based technologies revolutionize hydrocarbon extraction and mitigate its environmental impact?
  2. Is there currently the intellectual and infrastructure capacity to develop and apply genomic based biotechnologies to the hydrocarbon sector?
  3. What are the possible funding models to drive genomics based innovation in the hydrocarbon sector in Alberta and Canada?

Panel members will each provide their views in a short verbal presentation on these questions after which the forum will be opened to the attendees.
This is an inivtation only event but if you are interested in attending please contact Heather Smith.

Canadian Human and Statistical Genetics Meeting

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Genetics (CIHR-IG), in collaboration with the Canadian Gene Cure Foundation (CGCF), is pleased to sponsor the first joint Canadian Human Genetics Conference and Canadian Genetic Epidemiology and Statistical Genetics Meeting. This joint event will be held in the White Oak Conference Centre and Spa, offering outstanding facilities in the heart of Niagara Wine Country.

The conference builds on both the tradition of six Canadian Genetic Epidemiology and Statistical meetings and the success of four Canadian Human Genetics Conferences. This unique combination of expertise will promote scientific excellence and help with the development of collaborations both within - and between - the two areas of expertise.

Scientific Sessions will focus on:
•Animal models;
•Cancer genetics;
•Computational tool;
•Epigenetics;
•Knowledge translation;
•Microbiome in health and disease;
•Neurocognitive genetics;
•Rare variant methods.

With an anticipated attendance of over 200 participants - including researchers, clinicians, and trainees - this conference offers unique mentoring, networking and collaboration opportunities. The format of the conference aims to be as intimate as possible. Sessions tailored to each community are planned as parallel tracks in the morning, while afternoon plenary sessions of broader scope will bring communities together through to poster presentations in the evening. The schedule has been designed to maximize networking and socializing opportunities.

Making Connections Conference

Measuring research impact is a continually evolving science that seeks to answer many questions. What are the most important things to measure? What are the best practices for evaluating basic research? Is there a system to measuring research impact that effectively enhances the research being done? Is there a way to better use research evaluation that can lead us to having better research outcomes?

The 2012 Making Connections Conference will feature leading international and national experts, and provide researchers, policy-makers, practitioners, and research partners the opportunity to debate and explore the art, science, and future directions in measuring and evaluating research and innovation impact. This is your opportunity to help shape and enhance the science of measuring the impact of health research investment.

Registration details coming soon.
