Genomics Blog
Dr. Shane Green put some of my data up in a presentation for BioScience teachers today so I thought it might be a good idea to get the new information up tonight so without further ado.....
Welcome to Mikenomics 2.0
23andMe is using a new Illumina chip to analyze your spit kit. They introduced it late last year and new users or accounts automatically have their anaylsis done with the new chip when it was introduced, but those of us who signed on early felt a bit left out.
Never fear said 23andMe.
For just the cost of shipping the spit kit they did a new analysis but thanks to a mention on Oprah they immediately fell behind in getting the work done. This is the second time 23andMe has found itself overloaded and apolgized for being behind so a word to new users - don't take on an analysis unless you have lots of patience.
I've posted the raw data and a summary for you and teachers in particular may find it a good example to use in class.
There is a LOT of data in that file to go through and I make no claim to understanding it all. Even most researchers or scientists don't understand it all and I'm way behind them. However 23andMe has various summary files and I have compiled them into a .pdf for you to look at. Included in the information are the health, trait and carrier information that 23andMe has reasonable confidence in (which they call their Clinical Reports), as well as the Research Report data with a lower level of confidence.
For some reason 23andMe does not offer any summary compilation of their own for you can print or send to your family or close friends. I've done some cutting and pasting to get it all together so the information you'll see in the .pdf is fairly complete, just not the way 23andMe offers it. I've also eliminated the hyperlinks which go straight into my online account because even through I don't mind sharing the basic information, you don't get to see everything else in the account.
Despite a few formatting shortcomings the information is there, is interesting, and I am pleased to say finally shows that I have escaped the heartbreak of Psoriasis. ("an autoimmune disorder characterized by patches of itchy, scaly skin.")
I still have brown eyes which is good because I wouldn't want to have to change my Drivers' Licence and Passport information. You will notice though they kind of hedge their bets a bit on that trait.
I also have a not bad chance of living to be 100 and my family history tends to back up the genotype prediction. Unfortunately I still have an elevated risk of Age Related Macular Degeneration and deCODE has me at a slightly higher risk for Alzheimer's Disease so I'll try not to dwell on that combination too terribly much.
There is lots of information in there for you to play around with, analyze, and feel free to comment on what you see. Personal Genotyping is new, not an exact science, and is becoming more controversial as it becomes more prevalent.
You can find links to some of our other personal genotyping information at http://genomealberta.ca/PersonalGenotyping
I'm interested in your thoughts.
